Frank Jackson State Park

There are plenty of great fishing holes in Alabama, but few of them boast the sheer size of Lake Frank Jackson. The centerpiece of Frank Jackson State Park is one of the best places in the state to cast for crappie, and even if you are not a fisherman there is plenty to do there.

About the lake

Lake Frank Jackson, located just off Highway 331 near the town of Opp, is a popular destination for local anglers. The freshwater sunfish, known as crappie, are a very popular catch down south and are spectacularly abundant in sizes up to 15 inches long. The ecosystem also supports a number of other fish, including bass, channel catfish and bluegill. Visitors boast that they have no problem catching their limit out on this lake.

Other activities

Frank Jackson State Park also has a swimming beach set a distance from the boat launch and fishing areas. The lake is cool and clean, with a gentle grade into deeper water. A natural island resting in the middle of the lake is a great place for a picnic, and a footbridge was constructed for easy access.

Frank Jackson State Park has excellent amenities for RV campers, who flock to the lakefront sites for free cable TV hookups and access to a clean, well-maintained bathhouse. Tent camping is also available.
